Healthy Habits for Happiness

Healthy Habits for Happiness

We all have the ability to start each day in the best way possible. No matter what happens throughout the day, setting a positive precedent for your day will make a huge difference! Whether you’re in a funk, or if you’re looking for some ways to improve your daily habits, here are some easy habits that I follow everyday to keep me happy and healthy.

Starting Your Day :

  • First thing is first, make your bed – Once you’ve decided to get out of bed, you need to make sure that you’re not tempted to get back in. Make that bad boy and make it good!
  • Open ALLLL of your blinds – The sun and the light, even when raining outside, just give the room around you life.
  • Start fresh – I start and end everyday with a shower. If you’re a shower at night person, then wash your face and/or brush your teeth in the morning instead. I hope you already do that but like… no judging here. Personally, I shower, brush my teeth (sometimes I oil-pull with coconut oil first), and all of that makes me feel fresh.
  • Drink a large glass of water – Get your insides going and hydrate your body! My body is so sensitive that coffee legit feels like crack to me… not that I even know what crack feels like… but coffee is not something I have ever drank on a daily basis. So, when I do drink coffee, it’s crazaaayyy! Water gives me just the right amount of energy and wakes me up.
    • I follow up drinking my water with drinking a warm cup of lemon water and honey.
    • If I need an extra boost, I drink iced tea. Note: I am writing this pre-baby so I could very well be a coffee addict by now.
    • Use a large, reusable water bottle throughout the day to get the recommended amount of hydration that you need.
  • Feed your mind with positivity
    • Go-to iPhone apps : The Secret Daily Teachings, Relax Melodies, Meditations, Relax YogaMusic, RelaxMeditation.
    • Go-to daily readings : The Secret Daily Teachings Tear Sheet Edition, Jesus Calling, The Untethered Soul : A 52-Card Deck.

Throughout Your Day :

  • Make a To-Do List or Use a planner to schedule your day – They will help keep you organized and make it easier for you to remember important tasks to complete throughout the day. For me, writing things down and being able to cross them out work better than having lists and calendars in my phone.
  • Pick up a good book – A book that spoke to me was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Find a book that speaks to you and read it within a week. Break down the pages to see how many you need to read in 7 days to complete the book. I have a list of books that I can recommend so I’ll do that in another post!
  • Do something that makes you feel good – Some people like to workout, some people like to call their Grandma, whatever it is, do it! There is always time in the day to do something positive for yourself.
  • Laugh – I belly laugh almost every single day. Urijah says I’m an easy audience, but I can easily make myself laugh by being weird. Everyone should get a good laugh in each day 🙂
  • Treat Yo-Self – If you want to have a piece of chocolate, if you want to pick up your favorite Starbucks, if you want to run yourself a bath with a glitter bath bomb, if you’re lucky enough to afford to shop everyday, or if you want to cook for yourself and drink a glass of wine then… DO IT!
  • Don’t get caught up in social media – If social media makes you feel bad about yourself, then don’t look at it!
    • Don’t look at your exes new boo’s page, don’t look at the person you wish you looked like (she/he might not even look like that), don’t compare yourself to others, and don’t stare aimlessly at posts that aren’t bringing positivity into your life.
    • Even if you love social media, it is good to take a break and to live in reality from time to time. I have temporarily disabled my account many times and it was such a nice break. Try it!
    • If you find yourself negatively comparing yourself to other people, remind yourself that everyone is on their own timeline in life and to continue to focus on being the best YOU.
  • Take phone breaks
    • Try keeping your phone on silent somedays! Sometimes I read unimportant texts and don’t reply because it is oddly therapeutic.
    • Set “Do Not Disturb” up on your phone. You can set the timeframe that works best for you. That way, text messages won’t be as tempting to respond to while you wind down, and your phone won’t go off and mess up your sleep cycles.

Ending Your Day :

  • Reflect on your day – The end of the day is a great time to reflect on how your day went
    • I like to keep a journal of gratitude and write down everything I am grateful for from the day, then I like to figure out solutions to things that didn’t go as planned.
    • This is also a great time to take out your planner and to plan out your next day!
  • Get a good night’s sleep – End the day just as positive as you started it by winding down and doing your nightly habits.
    • I close the blinds, light a few candles, take a shower, and prep myself for the next day.
    • To become more relaxed, I listen to ASMR, sleep noises, or guided sleep meditations on a phone app.
    • Aim to get either the recommended amount of sleep you need, or aim to get the amount of sleep that you know you need.

I hope this helps anyone that may be going through a funk or if you’re looking for some easy habits that can provoke big changes!
